ABOUT
The Belgian artist Thomas Lerooy (°1981, Roeselare) explores the of an icon. His drawings and sculptures question the logic of the mental ecstasy that occurs when meeting an icon or monument. He analyses the power of the image and surveys the impact that it effects on the public audience. Thomas Lerooy thrills the audience through creating emotional pictures that command respect. His material and anecdotic allegoric language appeals and seduces. It is as a vibrating shimmering energetic field surrounds his sculptures. They ask for your attention and invite to dialogue. Thomas Lerooy wants to offer monuments and to create common places. He achieves this aim by modifying the structure of an existing statue, by transforming or disrupting its meaning Thomas Lerooy is not afraid of creating the grotesque. By doing so, he joins the entrenched tradition in Belgian art that is so persistently present in the work of James Ensor and René Magritte.
